Yoga 50 Plus
All the yoga in the world will not stop us getting older, but yoga will help us age more gracefully, with better health and peace of mind.
YOGA FOR HEALTHY AGING
The ancient healing tradition of yoga included physical asana, breath-work and meditation. The ultimate aim was to unite body, mind and spirit for balanced well-being. Modern yoga now has its main focus on physical appearance; often practiced by younger people, wearing the latest designs in 'active wear'; and competing to see who can perform the most extreme postures. While this approach may benefit the body physically, it limits the true intent of yoga.
"Yoga, according to B.K.S. Iyengar, is an art, a science and a philosophy. It touches a person's life at every level, physical, mental and spiritual."
This concept of yoga has the power to change our approach to how we age, our well-being and life. Yoga 50plus supports and fosters a sense of mindfulness through breath-work while incorporating traditional yoga asana that strengthen our bodies, while developing greater flexibility and balance. It offers a path to cultivating equanimity and mental resilience, absolutely essential as we face some of the inevitable consequences of getting older. Also in these times of uncertainty, when we are likely to be anxious for the future of our children and grandchildren, wisdom and guidance from us can be a wonderful act of love. It is imperative that we take responsibility for our own health and well-being. Yoga offers a form of exercise that can heal our bodies without depleting valuable energy, especially for those who may be older and/or have joint issues. If you want to improve your physical and mental wellbeing, Yoga 50 plus provides a healing and safe environment to do so.
"Words cannot convey the total value of yoga. It has to be experienced"

My name is Derynthia Boyd and I am 73 years old. I began practising yoga in my early thirties because of back problems. Yoga was the only exercise that relieved the pain and when I stopped doing yoga, the pain returned. It was obviously common sense to continue. I was not very interested in learning about yogic traditions; I was doing it purely to keep my back stable. However, the more I practised the more interested I became in learning 'just what was special about yoga'. Over time, I fell in love with yoga and that has never changed. Yoga offers me everything I need.
A prior career in training and HR made yoga teaching a natural fit when I retired. It is my interest and passion to study and share with others health-related information, particularly in regard to the benefits of yoga on the brain and body as we age. I have formal qualifications in yoga teaching and anatomy and physiology.
I founded Yoga50+ over ten years ago because I was unable to find the type of yoga I wanted to do. I continue to be inspired every day by the yogis who show up on their mats each and every week. They are my joy and inspiration.
